Tokyo Day 4: Ueno Zoo Entrance

The Ueno Zoo, founded in 1882, is the oldest zoo in Japan...

Right outside of the zoo we found a children's play area with an Anpan-man: a character that is said to take care of hungry animals... the creator of Anpan-man was a soldier during WWII and often very hungry - would dream of a type of bean-jam filled pastry called Anpan...

Anpan-man's head resembles this pastry and when he comes across a hungry animal he pulls part of his head off and feeds them... later on he regrows his head... strange, but sweet and fitting for outside of the zoo...

Right inside of the zoo is the location of the old Kanei-ji Temple's 5-story pagoda, one of the only fully intact buildings remaining from the temple...
