Tokyo Day 3: National Theater of Japan

After breakfast we headed across the street to the National Theater of Japan to see a Bunraku show...

this was a very beautiful theater and the show was awesome! Bunraku is a Japanese puppetry show - it is the only type of puppetry done with the puppeteers are completely visible on the stage... they all wear black robes from head to toe except for the head puppeteer who wears a black kimono with nothing on his head... it usually takes 20-30 years to become a head puppeteer!

the show was about a princess who went to save her mother from a kidnapper and ended up being taken too... and her husband is taken later... a friend of the family comes to help and makes his way onto the staff after beating the master of the house at a game of Go... the princess is taken outside and tied to a cherry blossom tree... she uses all of the fallen cherry blossoms and draws a rat with her foot... the rat is so lively that it comes to life and gnaws through the ropes that bind her to the tree... the family friend is then able to get in to save her husband and mother... together they kill off the master of the house and escape...

every role male and female was chanted/sung by a chanter while others played instruments to make the background noise...

very, very interesting show!

After the show we went out to the lobby area to visit the store and drink an Asahi beer... very nice experience...
