Entered into the Hanzomon station and headed towards Ueno station located in the Taito-ku district... Ueno is the park, zoo, and museum area... Ueno is also the location of the old Kanei-ji Temple grounds built to draw evil away from Edo Castle and home to the Tokugawa Shogun clan (7 of the Shoguns are buried here)...
During the Battle of Ueno the last of the Shogunate soldiers made a final stand against the Emperors samurai and lost - restoring power to the Emperor and ending the 700 year reign of shogunate power... during this battle over 300 shogunate soldiers were killed near the entrance to the park and most of Kanei-ji was destroyed...
Near the entrance we found the location of the tombs of two Shogi-tai soldiers (shogunate) that were placed here after the Battle of Ueno... We also found Saigo Takimori's statue - he led the Emperor's samurai forces and he is considered "The Last Samurai"
